Discussion:
is the Xbox 360 safe to buy now?

I'm one of those who has been putting off getting an Xbox 360 mainly because
of the 'red rings of death' syndrome. I know they have supposedly fixed that
now with the new 'Jasper' board, but is that really true? Have the number of
RRODs declined? I absolutely HATE taking anything back because of a fault,
and I dread the thought of having to replace my 360 more than once, all
because Microsoft (lead by the richest man on the planet) were so tight they
couldn't be bothered to fit proper heat sinks. I only hope Microsoft has
learned from this sorry affair.

I would say yes to that question... with one extra thing...

I experienced the RROD and Microsoft replaced my 360 for free. All I had to
do was send it in and they sent me another one. Only thing was I was
without an XBox for a week... that's all. And since it wasn't working, it
wasn't a big sacrifice...

OK, sounds like you had good treatment; I've heard plenty of horror stories.
But compare this nonsense with their first Xbox. Mine is nearly 6 years old,
has never broken down, and still works as good as the day I bought it. I
doubt ANY of us will say hand on heart their 360 has lasted 6 years despite
constant use. It's all very well increasing the power and improving the
graphics, but it sounds like they were so focused on those aspects they
completely forgot one elimentary thing: the more power in your chip, the
more heat it will generate, and more effective the heat dissipation will
have to be. As pc users we all know what happens when our hard drives, our
processors over heat over long periods of time....their lives shorten, and
THEY DIE! ;)

This is very true. I have heard they do make an extra cooling fan/pad thing
(MadCatz I think) that you can place under/on/near your 360 to stop the
overheating.

Now, when mine went sour, it was for an unknown reason... I still don't know
why. There are, as I found out, certain different RROD issues... I think
the one my 360 had was a hardware flaw and it was one they had to fix.

My girlfriend was the one who bought it for me, and she was a bit angry it
went sour... so she was happy to hear they fixed it for free.

Hi Tim,

We got our Xbox 360 three Christmases ago in 2007. In May 2008 we had a
RROD and sent it in to MS, it was one of a number of them that failed
between May and June that year, and a news story involving MS Europe not
being ready for it, and a six-to-eight week delay in getting it back
developed. We got the Xbox back after many apologies, and a free game and
memory unit as well. Ran like a charm, and was much quieter and less warm.
I had heard at the time that the DVD drives and motherboard/heat sink/fans
were being replaced.

In May of this year (and right before moving, typical!) we got an E78 error,
I delayed sending the unit in until we'd moved house and had a new Xbox 360
back in two weeks. The audio subsystem on that one had a problem outputting
from optical and when I called up to complain, the next day a UPS guy was at
my door with another brand new Xbox 360, and an empty coffin; he waited
while I boxed it up. Spotty service a year ago, possibly a manufacturing
error and an overwhelmed service center. This time, swift replacement,
wonderful FREE service and it does just fine. Quieter than the last one,
and not very warm.

HTH.

I've had mine fixed twice just this year alone. I had it over the 3yr
coverage but they still fixed it for free back in Jan. and then again last
month. While it is annoying to have to have it fixed at least they fix it
for free (well minus shipping cost). Mine sits out in open in a pretty
stable temp (basement home theater) so it shouldn't be getting to hot and if
it is then M$ needs to design better air flow.

Had mine since 2007 and only had one RROD. But that was caused by a certain
3 year old turning it on while under a dust cover where I couldn't see it.
Can hardly blame design for that. Discovered it still turned on a week later
and freaked. Put it aside for another week, unpowered, while I was too busy
to contact MS. Turns out I didn't need to - it came back to life after that
week unplugged and has been going strong ever since. And that's in a climate
where it can hit 43 celcius in the shade. I did invest in one of those 3 fan
coolers that clips on the back, though.

I haven't had any issues with mine, except the one I bought used off eBay...
The disc drive didn't open or didn't close all the time properly, so I
eventually broke down and sent it to Microsoft; haven't looked back since.
The updates to the dashboard are welcome improvements, especially if I were
to live in the US... I live in Canada so I don't get a lot of the media
goodies... But I also have my 360 hooked up to my server with all my DivX
movies that I downloaded, and it plays them fine :)
